OpenAI is turning advertising operations into a conversational workflow. Advertisers can now use natural-language prompts in ChatGPT to create, update and analyze ChatGPT Ads campaigns, including asking the system to transform an existing website or marketing brief into a campaign rather than manually rebuilding every element inside Ads Manager.

The capability was announced in OpenAI’s September 16 advertising update. The company says advertisers can use simple prompts directly in ChatGPT with the Ads Manager plugin to create campaigns, make changes, understand performance and receive recommendations about what to do next.

The most consequential part is not simply that an AI assistant can write ad copy. OpenAI is connecting a conversational interface to campaign-management actions and treating the advertiser’s existing website or brief as campaign input. That moves generative AI from a creative helper at the edge of advertising into the operational layer where campaigns are assembled and managed.

A website or brief can become the starting point for a campaign

OpenAI explicitly says advertisers can turn a website or brief into a campaign through the Ads Manager plugin. That compresses a workflow that traditionally requires marketers to inspect the landing page, extract the offer, define messaging, build campaign structure and then enter the resulting information into an advertising interface.

The website becomes more than the destination URL. It can function as source material from which the AI understands what the business offers and helps construct a campaign around it. A brief can play the same role when the advertiser already has goals, positioning or audience information documented elsewhere.

This does not mean the system removes the advertiser from the process. OpenAI’s broader advertising announcement repeatedly emphasizes advertiser control, particularly for AI-generated creative suggestions. The operational change is that the first interface for campaign construction can now be a prompt rather than a sequence of forms.

The plugin can create, update and analyze campaigns

The feature extends beyond campaign generation. OpenAI says the Ads Manager plugin can create, update and analyze campaigns through natural-language instructions.

That means the conversational layer can potentially cover several stages of the advertising lifecycle. An advertiser might begin by asking ChatGPT to build a campaign from a website, return later to request a budget or campaign update, and then ask for an analysis of performance once delivery data becomes available.

The significance is workflow continuity. Generative AI tools have already been widely used to brainstorm headlines or summarize exported advertising reports, but those activities often happen outside the system that actually controls the campaign. OpenAI is bringing the assistant closer to the management layer itself.

Its official Ads Manager Beta documentation shows the underlying platform already supports campaign creation and management, performance monitoring across campaigns, ad groups and ads, and account-level controls. The plugin gives advertisers a conversational route into that advertising stack.

Prompt-based management changes the advertising interface

Traditional ad platforms expose their logic through menus, tables, forms, filters and bulk-upload templates. Experienced media buyers learn the interface almost as deeply as they learn advertising strategy itself.

A prompt interface can invert that relationship. Instead of finding the correct control and translating a business objective into the platform’s UI, the advertiser can describe the intended outcome in ordinary language and let the system map that instruction to the underlying campaign structure.

This can reduce interface friction, but it also raises the importance of intent interpretation. A request such as “improve this campaign” is ambiguous unless the system understands whether the advertiser prioritizes traffic, conversions, cost efficiency, reach or another objective.

The best use of prompt-based campaign management may therefore depend less on short commands and more on clear operational instructions. Natural language makes the interface easier to approach, but precise goals remain necessary if the advertiser wants precise execution.

OpenAI is also putting AI creative assistance directly inside Ads Manager

The Ads Manager plugin is only one part of the September 16 rollout. OpenAI is separately adding AI assistance to the Ads Manager interface itself.

When an advertiser drafts an ad, OpenAI says the platform can suggest copy and imagery based on the campaign’s landing page and objective. Advertisers can review and edit those suggestions before deciding whether to add them to a campaign.

That creates two complementary AI workflows. ChatGPT can act as the conversational campaign-management interface through the plugin, while Ads Manager can provide contextual assistance during conventional ad creation.

OpenAI is also introducing optional AI-powered text customization. When enabled, the system can adapt an advertiser’s existing headlines and descriptions to better fit the context of a conversation and automatically translate the copy into a user’s preferred language.

The advertiser’s website is becoming machine-readable campaign infrastructure

If a website can be transformed into a campaign and its landing page can be used to suggest ad copy and imagery, the quality of the site affects more than post-click conversion. It becomes part of the input the advertising system uses before the ad is even finalized.

Clear product descriptions, specific benefits, accurate claims and well-structured landing pages can make it easier for an AI system to understand what the advertiser is selling. Ambiguous or thin pages can create the opposite problem.

This extends a trend NetContentSEO has already documented in ChatGPT Ads. OpenAI’s advertising system considers landing-page information as part of ad relevance, meaning conversation intent, landing pages and bids can all affect which ads appear.

The September tools add another role for the landing page: it can help generate the campaign and its creative suggestions. The same website can therefore influence campaign creation, eligibility and relevance, and the user experience after the click.

Ad operations are beginning to look like agentic work

The phrase “AI advertising” has often referred to optimization systems running behind the scenes: automated bidding, audience modeling or creative selection. OpenAI’s new workflow moves AI into the visible operational interface used by the advertiser.

A marketer can describe a task, give the system business context and ask it to perform campaign-management work. That is closer to an agentic workflow than a traditional recommendation panel because the AI is positioned between human intent and advertising-platform actions.

The boundaries still matter. OpenAI has not said advertisers can safely delegate every campaign decision without review, nor does the announcement eliminate account verification, advertising policies, billing controls or campaign approval processes.

The practical shift is that routine execution can increasingly be expressed as language. The advertiser defines what it wants done; the system helps translate that intention into campaign operations.

Performance analysis can happen in the same conversational interface

OpenAI says the plugin can help advertisers understand campaign performance and recommend what to do next. That connects reporting with action in a way that conventional dashboards often separate.

A dashboard can show impressions, clicks, spend and other metrics, but a marketer still has to interpret those numbers and decide which adjustment follows. A conversational interface can potentially answer a more useful question: what changed, why might it matter and which campaign action should be considered next?

OpenAI’s Ads Manager Beta documentation confirms that the platform tracks performance across campaigns, ad groups and individual ads. The new plugin can use that operational context to support analysis without requiring the advertiser to export a report and explain its structure to a separate AI tool.

Recommendations should still be treated as recommendations. Advertising performance depends on business economics, attribution quality and constraints that may not be fully represented in platform data. The convenience of a prompt does not make every suggested optimization correct.

Prompting lowers the execution barrier but not the strategic barrier

Making campaign creation conversational can allow smaller teams to perform tasks that previously required deeper familiarity with an advertising interface. A business owner may be able to start from a website and a plain-language objective rather than learning every Ads Manager control before creating a campaign.

That does not remove the need for advertising strategy. The advertiser still needs to know what it wants to achieve, what it can spend, which markets matter, how success should be measured and what claims it is willing to make.

Natural language simplifies the translation from strategy to platform configuration. It does not automatically produce the strategy itself.

This distinction will become increasingly important as advertising interfaces become easier to operate. When execution is cheap and fast, the competitive advantage can move toward better inputs: clearer positioning, stronger offers, better product data, more useful landing pages and more disciplined measurement.

OpenAI is connecting ads to the rest of the business stack

The prompt-based Ads Manager rollout arrived alongside integrations that push ChatGPT Ads into systems advertisers already use. OpenAI announced HubSpot as its first CRM partner and Shopify as its first ecommerce partner.

The Shopify integration can synchronize product catalogs and help merchants create campaigns from existing product information. NetContentSEO covered the international expansion under the broader shift that product feeds are becoming the foundation of paid AI discovery.

The Ads Manager plugin applies the same principle to campaign operations. Instead of requiring marketers to reconstruct context inside a new platform, OpenAI wants websites, briefs, product feeds and business systems to become inputs that the AI can work from.

That is a different model from treating Ads Manager as an isolated destination. The advertising platform becomes a service that can be operated from ChatGPT and connected to the systems where product and customer information already lives.

Campaign creation is moving from forms to intent

Advertising interfaces have spent decades asking marketers to express intent through structured fields. Choose the objective, enter the budget, define the geography, build the ad group, upload the creative and set the destination.

OpenAI’s September 16 update suggests that some of those steps can increasingly be inferred or assembled from natural-language instructions and existing business assets. The marketer can start by describing the goal and pointing the system toward the website or brief.

The underlying campaign still has structure. OpenAI’s campaign documentation shows that ChatGPT Ads campaigns contain objectives, budgets, dates, targeting and ad groups, while individual ads contain creative and landing-page elements. The prompt does not abolish those components; it becomes another way of producing and manipulating them.

This is why the change is more substantial than adding a chatbot to Ads Manager. The conversational layer can become an abstraction over the campaign schema itself.

The website may become the most important advertising brief

OpenAI’s ability to turn a website into a campaign reinforces a lesson that extends beyond ChatGPT Ads: machine-readable business information is becoming increasingly valuable as AI systems take on more marketing work.

A well-built site tells both people and machines what the company sells, who the offer is for, why it is useful and what the customer should do next. Those details can now inform not only organic discovery and landing-page conversion but campaign creation itself.

Advertisers that treat their websites as vague brand brochures may find that AI systems have less concrete material from which to construct accurate campaigns. Businesses with explicit product information and differentiated offers give the system stronger inputs.

The advertiser’s website is therefore becoming a source document for automation. What used to be merely the destination after an ad click can increasingly help determine the ad that exists before the click.

OpenAI is making the prompt an advertising control surface

The September 16 rollout marks a notable step in the evolution of ChatGPT Ads. OpenAI is not simply using AI to generate another headline. It is allowing advertisers to create, update and analyze campaigns through natural-language prompts and to turn existing websites or briefs into campaign inputs.

Combined with AI-assisted creative suggestions inside Ads Manager, text customization, Shopify catalog integration and CRM connectivity, the direction is toward an advertising platform where AI mediates more of the work between business data and campaign execution.

Advertisers remain responsible for objectives, budgets, claims, measurement and review. But the mechanics of operating the platform are beginning to move away from menus and forms toward conversational instructions.

For ChatGPT Ads, the prompt is no longer only where a consumer asks a question. It is becoming the place where an advertiser can tell the advertising system what to do.
