OpenAI’s Help Center now states that “ChatGPT agent is no longer available” and directs users toward ChatGPT Work for longer, multi-step work and a new cloud browser for browsing tasks. The language marks a product transition that is already reflected in official documentation, even if the same page has not yet been fully updated.

That last point matters. The article still contains legacy sections describing Agent availability and usage limits. So the official message is clear, but the documentation is mid-migration: one page currently describes both the end of the old product and parts of its former operating model.

What OpenAI now says

The updated ChatGPT Agent help page says the product is no longer available. Instead, OpenAI points users to ChatGPT Work for longer, multi-step tasks, while positioning the cloud browser as the route for browser-based work.

This is not merely a rename in a navigation menu. It changes how OpenAI frames autonomous and semi-autonomous work inside ChatGPT: the destination is no longer a standalone Agent experience, but a broader work-oriented environment with tools available in context.

The documentation is not fully aligned yet

At the same time, the Agent help page retains older material explaining who can access Agent and what its limits are. That creates an unusual but useful signal for product watchers: the transition is officially underway, while the support content still contains traces of the old product state.

For users, that means individual pages, help articles, UI labels, and entitlement details may not all change at the same time. For publishers and analysts, it is important not to present the situation as a clean, completed technical migration. The product direction is explicit; the documentation still shows its previous structure.

Why ChatGPT Work is the important replacement

ChatGPT Work is being positioned around the kind of activity Agent users were trying to complete: sustained tasks, several connected steps, files and tools in one workflow, and work that benefits from an ongoing workspace rather than a one-off chat response.

The shift also fits a broader product pattern. OpenAI is moving capabilities out of isolated assistant formats and toward reusable work surfaces, connected tools, apps, and workflows. The value is not simply that a model can browse or act; it is that the work can be organised, continued, reviewed, and connected to the systems a team already uses.

What happens to browser-based work

The updated guidance also separates browsing from the old Agent label. Users are directed to the new cloud browser for browsing tasks. That matters because browser access, task execution, and longer project work are no longer being described as one product category.

For SEO and AI visibility professionals, the distinction is worth following. AI systems are increasingly performing research, comparison, and workflow steps on behalf of users. The product container may change, but the underlying question remains: can the assistant reliably find, interpret, and act on information about a business or publisher?

What builders should do now

  • Review Agent-dependent workflows: document the tasks, tools, prompts, and data sources they rely on.
  • Check the new ChatGPT Work path: assess whether the workflow can be reproduced as ongoing workspace work rather than an Agent task.
  • Separate browsing from business logic: avoid designing a process that assumes one product label will permanently cover both.
  • Use connected tools deliberately: APIs, MCP servers, apps, and approval flows should be explicit and testable.
  • Watch official documentation: the legacy content remaining on the page makes further clarification likely.

The wider product signal

The end of ChatGPT Agent as a standalone offering is less important than the replacement model OpenAI is describing. AI work is becoming a workspace problem: long-running, tool-connected, reviewable, and designed to sit inside real projects rather than a single autonomous chat feature.

OpenAI’s documentation is still catching up with that transition, but the strategic direction is already public. ChatGPT Agent is being retired as a product label. ChatGPT Work and the cloud browser are the new surfaces OpenAI is pointing users toward.
