A reported change to ChatGPT’s logged-out experience raises a measurement question for AI visibility teams: does the monitoring system capture what the user can actually see? In a public post surfaced on 2 October 2026, Sanjay Singh describes a lightweight frontend called unauth-mweb becoming more prevalent in the anonymous sessions his team observed. This remains an attributed technical observation, not an official OpenAI rollout announcement or an independently established global deployment.

Singh reports that the interface does not expose the model or underlying search queries. Inline citations remain visible, while the final Sources panel can contain fewer pages than those cited in the answer. He also describes a dedicated advertising field in the response structure. These observations concern what the application exposes; they do not demonstrate a different retrieval process, a change in search quality or an advertisement actually being displayed.

Missing traces are not missing searches

OpenAI’s official search documentation confirms that people who are not signed in can use web search. It also explains that ChatGPT may rewrite a request into multiple targeted queries and provides guidance for opening citations and the Sources panel when available. That documentation does not confirm the specific frontend transition described in the post.

The distinction between retrieval and display is essential. If a collector stops receiving intermediate search queries, it should record that information as unavailable. Recording zero queries would turn an observability limitation into a claim about system behaviour. Similarly, the absence of a model label does not justify assigning a presumed model to the result.

The reported mismatch between inline citations and the Sources panel deserves a separate check. A domain can remain linked within the answer even if a collector looking only at the final panel misses it. A fall in measured citation counts could therefore reflect incomplete extraction. It could also reflect a genuine output change; the measurement method needs to distinguish those possibilities before explaining the movement to a client.

Authentication belongs in the experiment record

AI visibility reports should state whether results came from signed-in sessions, anonymous web sessions or another collection surface. These are conditions of the experiment, not interchangeable labels for the same observation. Keep a record of the prompt, collection time, locale, interface and visible search behaviour alongside the response.

For a controlled comparison, repeat the same representative prompts in fresh conversations across both authentication states. Hold other conditions as steady as possible and use multiple runs. Compare the answer text, inline links and Sources-panel links separately. Mark which fields were available in each surface rather than combining them into a single source count.

Even a consistent difference would establish a difference in the observed outputs, not its cause. Account context, location, product variants and normal generation variability can complicate interpretation. A useful report should identify the observed pattern and the evidence supporting it without attributing it automatically to a new retrieval engine.

Audit collection before changing the content strategy

The immediate operational response is to inspect monitoring coverage. Ask whether the collector reads inline citations, only a source panel, or additional fields supplied by the interface. Preserve enough evidence to check a sample against the rendered answer. If a collection method changes, annotate the reporting date and avoid presenting the resulting discontinuity as a clean trend in brand visibility.

An advertising field needs equally careful treatment. Its presence in a response structure is not an ad impression, a targeting policy or proof that organic citations are influenced by advertising. Those claims require their own evidence.

The report makes authentication status a useful variable to document in AI Search research. It does not yet establish two separate search systems for anonymous and signed-in users. Before responding with new content or changing a visibility strategy, verify that the apparent change survives a comparable measurement method. Otherwise, the team risks optimising against a change in its own view of the answer.
