Fresh ranking turbulence and reports of lost Discover traffic are drawing attention to Google’s ongoing September 2026 spam update. Observers describe the movement around September 30 as a possible second wave. That label is an interpretation of the rollout’s behavior, rather than a separately announced Google phase.

What Google has confirmed

The Google Search Status Dashboard records the update’s launch on September 24 at 09:15 PDT, or 18:15 CEST. Google says it applies globally and across all languages, with a rollout that may take up to two weeks. At verification, the dashboard continued to list the update as active, with no announcement identifying a distinct “phase two.”

What the independent observations show

Search Engine Roundtable’s October 1 coverage brings together tracking charts, practitioner observations and community reports of renewed movement from September 30. Some site owners reported sharp declines, including Discover traffic losses. These are reported experiences, not a representative measure of the impact across publishers.

The coverage also reproduces Glenn Gabe’s observation that Reddit’s AI-translated pages were gaining visibility again in Italy, Germany, Brazil, France and other markets. This does not establish a deliberate exemption for Reddit, a change announced by Google or a causal link between those gains and other publishers’ losses.

A second wave is a useful description with limits

Our editorial interpretation is that clustered changes during an unfinished rollout can justify closer monitoring. Calling that cluster a second wave can describe its timing, but it does not explain which systems changed or why a particular site moved.

A visibility sensor summarizes the queries it tracks. An individual site’s traffic reflects its own audience and exposure. Agreement between those signals strengthens the case that something changed, without establishing the mechanism or proving that every decline has the same cause.

Separate Search and Discover when diagnosing losses

Teams should examine the affected surfaces separately. Record which pages, countries and query groups changed in Search, then review Discover performance on its own terms. A simultaneous decline is worth investigating, but one chart should not stand in for the other.

Compare the timing with publishing activity, technical changes and measurement conditions. Where data allows, distinguish falling impressions from a change in click-through rate. This helps define the problem before choosing a response and reduces the temptation to explain every movement with the update’s name.

What the Reddit observation means for AI content

The reported return of translated pages is a reason to inspect the specific results and their usefulness. It is not evidence that AI translation universally improves rankings or that publishers should automatically expand into more languages.

Our recommendation is to evaluate any translation strategy against audience needs, editorial accuracy and the ability to maintain the pages. A competitor’s visibility increase does not reveal the complete set of factors behind its performance, and copying its production method may not reproduce the outcome.

Preserve evidence before making broad changes

Keep dated records of affected pages, result examples and relevant performance segments. Review concrete quality or technical problems when the evidence identifies them. Avoid treating a temporary position change as a settled verdict on every page in a site.

The verified story is an ongoing official spam update accompanied by a renewed cluster of independent volatility reports. Search and Discover teams have reason to investigate their own exposure, while the existence of an official second phase and the causes of individual gains or losses remain unconfirmed.
