DemandSphere’s branded-query tracking shows a sharp increase in Google AI Overview presence toward the end of September. The finding adds a time series to recent practitioner observations that brand-name searches increasingly return generated answers. For brand teams, it strengthens the case for monitoring what those answers say, while leaving their effect on traffic and reputation open to investigation.

What the monitored data shows

In its October 1, 2026 report, DemandSphere publishes daily AI Overview presence for tracked branded keywords. The series starts at 26.12% on September 1 and reaches 80.23% on September 28 and 82.06% on September 29, following a 90.48% reading on September 27. Earlier readings were often around 27–35%, with intervening spikes.

The method describes one daily measurement per keyword across markets and devices. Presence counts whether or not the brand itself is cited. The published page does not state the keyword count or provide market and device breakdowns. DemandSphere says Google has not announced this change. The figures describe its monitored set, not all branded searches or all users.

Presence is different from representation

Our editorial interpretation is that an AI Overview appearing on a brand query creates another surface to inspect. It does not establish that the brand receives a supporting link, that the answer is accurate or that the module appears above the official website.

Those distinctions should shape reporting. A high presence rate can coexist with different citation patterns and page positions. Teams need to review the actual answer and its context before concluding that their own brand gained visibility or lost control of its narrative.

Why this differs from the earlier 93% observation

The earlier practitioner observation discussed in this news cycle was a separate spot check of roughly 100 brands. DemandSphere’s series measures daily presence within its own tracked keyword set. The percentages should not be combined into a single estimate or treated as contradictory measurements of the same population.

The useful contribution of a time series is its ability to show movement within a monitoring system. It still requires context about the sample and collection conditions before it can support a claim about the whole search market.

What brand teams can monitor

Record answer presence, position relative to the official result, factual claims and linked sources as separate fields. Include the query, language, location, device and observation date. A repeated record can reveal whether an outdated description is persistent or appears only under particular conditions.

Prioritize verifiable errors over wording preferences. If an answer describes a discontinued product as current, examine the cited material and the company’s own documentation. Fix an outdated owned source when found, then monitor subsequent answers. That does not guarantee immediate correction or control over generated wording.

The implication for GEO and branded SEO

For this story, generative engine optimization means evaluating how a company is represented in generated answers and making reliable information available. It does not imply a new guaranteed method for obtaining citations.

Our recommendation is to keep important company and product facts clear, current and consistent, then assess results through observation. An answer module is an additional discovery context; it is not evidence that the official website has become irrelevant or that conventional branded performance metrics should be discarded.

Keep business effects separate from interface prevalence

Compare the monitoring record with branded impressions, clicks and meaningful business outcomes. Simultaneous changes can suggest a question to investigate, but do not prove that AI Overview presence caused a traffic decline or a reputational effect.

DemandSphere’s findings document a substantial change in its tracked branded-query results. The practical response is closer inspection of answer content and sources, with the sample limits kept visible and commercial conclusions reserved for evidence that actually measures them.
