Ahrefs Finally Adjusts Traffic Estimates for AI Overviews Instead of Treating Every SERP Feature Equally

Ahrefs has changed how Site Explorer estimates organic traffic in SERPs shaped by AI Overviews and other search features. Its new Adaptive organic traffic model assigns separate click-through-rate weights to 15 SERP feature types instead of treating their traffic impact as one generic adjustment.

The model was introduced on August 4, 2026 and highlighted again in Ahrefs' September 29 product update. It directly addresses a growing SEO measurement problem: the same ranking position can produce very different traffic depending on what Google places around it.

AI Overviews now receive their own CTR weighting

Adaptive mode assigns individual CTR weights to 15 types of SERP features, explicitly including AI Overviews. Ahrefs' previous Static model used a less granular approach to SERP-feature adjustments.

That means an estimated ranking no longer has to imply the same traffic opportunity when an AI Overview changes the click environment around the organic result.

The model recalibrates against real Web Analytics data

Ahrefs says the Adaptive model is recalibrated monthly using real Web Analytics data. This allows the estimated effect of SERP features to change as observed click behavior changes rather than remaining tied to a permanently fixed CTR assumption.

For SEO forecasting, that is especially relevant as Google continues changing the design, placement and prevalence of AI-generated search experiences.

Adaptive launched as opt-in — but the API has already switched

When Ahrefs introduced the model on August 4, it was opt-in inside Site Explorer settings. Users could switch between Static and Adaptive modes, and Ahrefs said Adaptive would become the default after testing.

There is an important update to the original rollout: on September 4, Ahrefs changed the default Site Explorer API traffic mode from static to adaptive. API users who want the old calculation must now explicitly pass traffic_mode=static.

Adaptive estimates are available through the API

Ahrefs added the traffic_mode parameter on August 4 across multiple Site Explorer endpoints, including Metrics, Metrics by country, Metrics history, Organic competitors, Organic keywords, Pages by traffic and Top pages.

The parameter can select adaptive or static, affecting organic traffic and traffic-value calculations.

Why this matters for AI-era SEO measurement

Traffic estimates based mainly on ranking position become less representative when SERP features absorb attention or answer the query before a user reaches an organic result. AI Overviews make that problem particularly visible.

A page can retain the same ranking while its realistic traffic opportunity changes substantially. Models that distinguish SERP environments can therefore produce a more nuanced estimate than models that assume a position carries a relatively stable CTR.

The NetContentSEO view

The important change is not simply that Ahrefs added another setting. AI Overviews are now explicitly part of the traffic-estimation model.

That formalizes something publishers have been observing in analytics: ranking visibility and traffic potential are no longer interchangeable metrics. As AI features reshape click behavior, SEO tools themselves have to adapt their forecasting models or risk overstating the traffic value of traditional organic positions.
