Ahrefs Connects SEO Pages to AI Visibility—but Google’s Query-Based AI Surfaces Remain Outside the Metric

Ahrefs is connecting traditional SEO page analysis directly with AI visibility. The Top Pages report now shows how many AI responses each individual page appears in, bringing AI exposure into the same workflow SEOs already use to evaluate organic pages.

The new column is sortable, exportable and available through the API. Access requires a matching Brand Radar subscription.

Every SEO page can now carry an AI appearance count

Instead of analyzing AI visibility only from a brand-level dashboard, Ahrefs can now associate individual URLs in Top Pages with the number of AI responses in which those pages appear.

This creates a practical bridge between two datasets that SEO teams increasingly need to compare: pages performing in conventional organic search and pages being surfaced by generative systems.

The metric is sortable, exportable and available via API

Ahrefs has made the AI appearances column operational rather than purely informational. Users can sort Top Pages by AI appearances, include the data in exports and retrieve AI visibility data programmatically through Ahrefs' API ecosystem.

That makes it possible to identify URLs with disproportionate AI exposure and compare them against rankings, estimated traffic, links and other page-level SEO signals.

But query-based AI Overviews and AI Mode are excluded

There is an important boundary around the new metric. Ahrefs explicitly says that AI appearances in Top Pages exclude its search-query-based AI Overviews and AI Mode datasets.

Ahrefs separately supports Google AI Overviews and AI Mode inside Brand Radar, including keyword-derived datasets represented in the API as google_ai_overviews_keywords and google_ai_mode_keywords. Those models measure visibility derived from Google search queries rather than prompt-based AI responses.

The distinction means the Top Pages AI appearance count should not be interpreted as a universal total of every AI surface on which a URL may appear.

Brand Radar provides the AI visibility layer

The feature requires a corresponding Brand Radar subscription. Brand Radar tracks AI visibility across systems including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI experiences, while distinguishing between mentions, citations and pages retrieved during answer generation.

Ahrefs defines a citation as a page referenced in the generated answer, while its broader “Found in” metric can also include pages retrieved by the AI but not ultimately cited.

The NetContentSEO view

This is another sign that AI visibility is becoming a page-level SEO metric rather than a separate brand-monitoring exercise.

The interesting analysis is no longer simply “does this brand appear in ChatGPT?” SEOs can increasingly ask which exact URLs appear in AI responses, how frequently they surface and whether the pages winning in AI are the same pages winning in Google Search.

The exclusion of query-based AI Overviews and AI Mode also matters. AI visibility remains fragmented across different retrieval environments, and no single count should yet be treated as a complete measure of a page's exposure across generative search.
