Reddit has reported a significant decline in search referrals, adding an unusually concrete data point to the debate over whether generative AI is changing the traffic relationship between Google and the open web. In its third-quarter 2026 shareholder communications, the company said search referral traffic fell meaningfully late in the quarter and continued declining in October. The company reported a drop of more than one million search referrals per week on average during October.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman named Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode as the largest part of the company's working hypothesis for the decline. But he also identified another possible factor: weaker rankings for machine-translated Reddit content, particularly outside the United States. Neither explanation was quantified separately, so it would be misleading to say the entire traffic loss has been proven to result from AI-generated answers.

What Reddit Actually Reported

The October figure is a decline in weekly search referrals, not evidence that Reddit lost one million unique users each week or that all lost clicks came from Google AI Mode. The shareholder letter did not provide a full search-engine breakdown or the starting referral baseline for this decline. The impact was especially visible in logged-out and web usage, though search is also a route by which people return to the app or their accounts.

Reddit's global daily active uniques stood at approximately 130.3 million in the third quarter, broadly flat sequentially. The company cautioned that continued search weakness could reduce its fourth-quarter daily active uniques by a low-double-digit percentage relative to a base of about 130 million. This was a conditional projection, not a reported fourth-quarter result.

Why the CEO Suspects AI Overviews and AI Mode

During the earnings call, Huffman described a two-part hypothesis. First, Google has been expanding AI Overviews and AI Mode across markets, changing how much of the search results experience is devoted to generated answers and where ordinary web links appear. Second, Reddit believes some machine-translated content is ranking less prominently, particularly in international markets.

The central concern is that a user can satisfy an information need inside Google's own answer interface without visiting the page from which relevant information originated. A page may still be indexed, retrieved, referenced or visible in search, while receiving fewer visits. However, Reddit has not publicly isolated the effect of AI features from rankings, user behavior, translation quality or other changes.

A Search Visibility Problem Is Not Necessarily a Demand Problem

Huffman argued that interest in Reddit remains substantial and that Google continues crawling the platform extensively. That distinction matters: lower referral traffic does not automatically mean the underlying content has become less valuable or that fewer people want it. It may instead indicate that the intermediary is answering more questions itself or directing users differently.

For publishers, this creates a measurement problem. Traditional SEO reports often focus on impressions, rankings and organic sessions. Those metrics can now move in different directions. Strong visibility in a generated answer is not equivalent to a click, and a reduction in clicks does not by itself reveal whether a brand has lost recognition, distribution or only a particular referral channel.

Reddit's Response: More Direct Relationships

Reddit is preparing tests of a logged-in-only experience in selected markets outside the United States. The company wants to determine how much content visitors arriving from search or shared links can see before being prompted to log in. The approach could support engagement and data protection, but it introduces trade-offs for accessibility and open-web discovery.

That strategy is particularly revealing because Reddit is not a small independent publisher. It is a major destination with an established brand, active communities and a vast collection of discussions that can answer long-tail search questions. If it is considering trading some search reach for deeper direct relationships, smaller publishers should evaluate how dependent their own businesses are on external search distribution.

What Publishers Should Learn—Without Overclaiming

The lesson is not that SEO is finished or that every decline in organic traffic can be blamed on AI Overviews. Reddit's case is evidence of a reported referral decline alongside a plausible, but not conclusively measured, explanation. Publishers should segment traffic by country, device, landing page and branded versus non-branded search; review changes in search impressions and click-through rates; and compare performance with the rollout of AI experiences without treating correlation as proof.

It is also worth building direct channels that users can return to independently: newsletters, recognizable editorial brands, communities and useful destination pages. For sites that rely heavily on informational queries, the value proposition needs to extend beyond answering a question that an AI summary can already address. Original reporting, tools, specialist interpretation, local knowledge and ongoing community participation can give people reasons to visit the source.

From Ranking to Recognition—and Back to the Click

AI Search changes the meaning of distribution. Content can be read, summarized or used to shape an answer without the user taking the familiar path from search result to website. That makes brand recognition increasingly important, but recognition alone does not pay for editorial production. Publishers still need to understand whether AI exposure produces measurable audience relationships, commercial outcomes or referrals.

Reddit's disclosure should therefore be treated as a warning signal, not a universal causal verdict. The challenge for publishers is to measure the gap between being visible in search and receiving meaningful visits—and to reduce dependence on any one gateway to their audiences.
