As AI-powered search evolves, the fundamentals of making web content discoverable still matter. In a Bing Webmaster Blog article published July 31, 2025, Fabrice Canel and Krishna Madhavan explain why website owners should use XML sitemaps and IndexNow together, rather than treating them as competing alternatives.
This is an evergreen technical SEO recommendation, not a newly announced feature in October 2026. Its relevance to AI search is that search engines need to discover and process eligible content before they can consider it for search experiences, including AI-powered results.
XML sitemaps provide a structured inventory
An XML sitemap lists URLs a website wants search engines to discover. For large or frequently updated sites, a well-maintained sitemap can help crawlers find important pages and understand the scope of available content. It complements internal linking rather than replacing it.
Bing emphasizes accurate sitemap maintenance, especially the <lastmod> field. The timestamp should reflect a meaningful update to the page itself. Automatically assigning a new modification date to every URL whenever a sitemap is regenerated creates a misleading signal.
The blog also notes that Bing does not use the sitemap <changefreq> and <priority> hints. Site owners should therefore focus on accurate URL coverage and meaningful modification dates instead of trying to manipulate those optional fields.
IndexNow supplies faster change notifications
IndexNow lets participating search engines receive notifications when URLs are created, updated or deleted. Rather than waiting for a crawler to revisit the sitemap or discover a change through links, the site can submit the affected URL when the change occurs.
That notification is not a command to index the page, and it does not guarantee crawling, inclusion in results or a citation in an AI-generated answer. It is a discovery and update signal.
Why Bing recommends both
The two mechanisms serve complementary purposes. A sitemap provides broad coverage of a site's preferred URLs, while IndexNow communicates timely changes. Used together, they help a search engine maintain awareness of both the site's overall structure and its newest updates.
For a publisher, a practical implementation is to maintain a clean XML sitemap that includes canonical, indexable pages and accurate <lastmod> values, then send IndexNow notifications for relevant publishing, editing and deletion events. Technical quality still matters: broken URLs, incorrect canonicals, blocked resources and weak internal linking can undermine discoverability regardless of the submission method.
What this means for AI Search and GEO
AI-powered search does not remove the need for discovery and indexing infrastructure. Search experiences that depend on retrieved web content still benefit from reliable information about which URLs exist and when they change.
However, discoverability is not the same as citation visibility. Neither a sitemap entry nor an IndexNow submission guarantees that a page will be selected as a source for an AI-generated answer. Teams should separately monitor crawling and indexing, visibility in search, AI citations where measurable, and actual referral traffic.
Implementation checklist for publishers
- Include important canonical, indexable URLs in XML sitemaps and keep the files accessible.
- Use
<lastmod>only when a page has meaningfully changed. - Do not rely on
<changefreq>or<priority>to influence Bing. - Trigger IndexNow notifications when pages are added, substantially updated or removed.
- Validate that URLs resolve correctly and are not undermined by redirect, canonical or indexing problems.
- Measure discovery and indexing separately from AI citations and referrals.
NetContentSEO assessment
Bing's recommendation remains useful because it clarifies the roles of two foundational technical SEO tools. XML sitemaps provide coverage; IndexNow provides speed. Together, they can improve the flow of URL information to participating search engines, but they should not be presented as an AI citation shortcut. The strongest GEO strategy begins with sound technical discoverability and then evaluates AI visibility as a distinct outcome.
